Privacy

The Hazel House Studio is a small cake studio in Redmond, Washington. This page explains what this website collects, why, and who helps us handle it.

When You Order

Your cart and checkout run on Shopify. When you place an order, Shopify collects what’s needed to complete it, such as your name, email, phone number, pickup or delivery details, and payment, and shares the order with us so we can make your cake. Payment goes through Shopify; we never see your full card number.

Shopify’s own privacy policy covers how Shopify handles checkout. This notice covers how we use your order information: to make your order, to arrange pickup or delivery, and to measure our ads with Google and Meta, as described under How We Advertise below.

How We Learn What Works

We use Vercel Web Analytics and PostHog to understand how people use the site, so we can make ordering easier. They record:

  • the pages you visit and the links and buttons you click
  • choices you make while ordering, such as design, flavor and size, pickup or delivery, the ZIP code you check for delivery, and the date and time you choose
  • general information about your device and browser, and an approximate location based on your IP address

PostHog also records how pages are used (scrolling, taps and clicks) so we can see where the site is confusing. Anything you type is hidden in these recordings, and so are your cake message and order notes.

We don’t sell this information.

How We Advertise

We advertise with Google Ads. A Google tag on this site tells Google which pages you visit, so we can tell whether our ads are working. Google may also use this to show our ads to people who’ve visited before.

Google’s tags use cookies and similar identifiers to measure visits and to connect ad interactions, such as seeing or clicking one of our ads, with purchases. Third-party vendors, including Google, may show our ads on sites across the internet, and use cookies to show them based on your past visits to this website.

When you place an order, Shopify shares the purchase with Google: a transaction ID, the order total and currency, and details of the items you bought.

We may also use Google’s enhanced conversions, a feature that uses the email address, phone number, name and address you give at checkout to match purchases with ad interactions more accurately. Your email, phone number, name and street address are hashed (turned into a scrambled code) before they’re sent; your city, state, ZIP code and country may be sent without hashing. Hashing doesn’t make this information anonymous: Google matches the codes against Google Accounts to connect a purchase with an ad.

We don’t send your full card number or security code (CVV) to Google through this tracking.

Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services and how it uses enhanced conversion data.

You can turn off personalized ads from Google in Google’s ad settings. That changes the ads Google shows you; it doesn’t stop Google’s tags from measuring visits and purchases.

We also advertise on Facebook and Instagram, which are run by Meta. A Meta Pixel on this site tells Meta which pages you visit, the cakes and mini cheesecakes you look at, and what you add to your cart, so we can tell whether our ads are working. Meta may also use this to show our ads to people who’ve visited before. The pixel uses cookies and similar identifiers to connect visits with ad interactions, such as seeing or clicking one of our ads.

Our checkout runs the same pixel, through Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app. It tells Meta when you start checking out, add payment details and place an order, with an order ID, the order total and currency, details of the items you bought, and whether it’s your first order with us. To match purchases with ad interactions, Shopify may also send Meta details you give at checkout, such as your email address, phone number, name, city, state, ZIP code and country, from your browser and directly from Shopify’s servers.

Meta explains how it uses information from businesses like ours in its privacy policy. You can see the activity businesses share with Meta and disconnect it from your account in Your activity off Meta technologies, and change the ads Meta shows you in your ad preferences. That changes how Meta uses the information; it doesn’t stop the pixel from measuring visits and purchases.

Cookies and Browser Storage

A cookie remembers your cart, and your browser keeps your cake choices while you move between the order steps. PostHog uses a cookie and browser storage to recognize a returning visitor; they don’t contain your name or contact details. Google’s tags and Meta’s pixel use cookies and similar identifiers for our ads, as described above. You can clear or block cookies in your browser at any time, though the cart needs its cookie to work. This site doesn’t respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals.
